Fresh baked bread smells usually had mom heading to the kitchen with a small plate. While she didn't bake loaves of bread, she did enjoy the ones I made...as do my husband and children. Each time I bake a loaf for a lodge event, I always have to make an extra for the house or the one for the event goes missing.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups All-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 4 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
For the top of the bread:
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
Directions:
Step 1: In a large bowl mix flour, baking soda, baking powder & salt
Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix sugar, buttermilk & egg
Step 3: Slowly incorporate wet ingredients into dry and knead until it comes together, dough should not stick to the the bowl and be slightly crumbly
Step 4: place in a greased pan (or parchment lined pan), score the top
Step 5: Mix the 1/4 cup melted butter & 1/4 cup buttermilk and brush the top of the loaf and then bake at 375 for approximately 45 minutes to 50 minutes. You can continue to brush the top with the butter mixture while it bakes and when you pull it out.
